‘Jane Booth: Instinct’ opens Jan. 25 at Daum Museum
Sedalia, Missouri – Jan. 14, 2020 – In her inaugural show at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College campus in Sedalia, Jane Booth will exhibit a selection of recent, heroically scaled paintings starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25. The exhibition will remain on view until May 31, 2020.
In her studio, surrounded on all sides by the gently rolling landscape of eastern Kansas, Booth filters cyclical impressions of the outside world through an interior process that intuitively translates the concrete and material into colorfully vibrant compositions whose poetry reimagines nature’s inspiration.
Citing the Persian mystic Rumi and Indian poet Kabir as harmonious forebears, Booth also incorporates aspects of the ecstatic and numinous in her work. The artist’s evocations of landscape, emotions, and mythologies are based in a compositional language of saturated color fields, zigzag calligraphy, and a feeling-filled application of paint and line. The works’ encompassing size contrasts with the often-intimate nature of Booth’s mark making, allowing for an almost voyeuristic visit with seemingly private notations.
A more recent muse is the twentieth-century modernist artist, curator, and mentor John Graham. His Surrealist-inflected artworks feature a disparate array of visual motifs, alternately graphic and painterly, allusive and abstract. In a similar way, Booth’s paintings combine varied formal strategies that result in passages that are referential and others that are opaque. Her pictures call loudly to us even as they convey an ineffable disposition, a combination that attracts and holds the viewer in a rewarding give and take.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, April 2, Booth will present a free artist lecture a in the Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus. The public and college community are invited to attend. The exhibit will close on Sunday, May 31.

Life streams by in a cacophony of unimaginable complexity, constantly changing. This new body of work offers experiential glimpses of a point in time, the past fading as the present manifests.
In this way, I’ve come to understand my work as journalistic, as visual expressions of what is felt and experienced. I like to spend time with a finished piece, feeling my way through it, listening to what is being revealed. Often there's imagery that reveals what was previously unconscious, that hadn’t yet floated up in to the mind to be identified as this or that.
